5 Johann Heinrich Ludwig WETTIG(416), son of Johann Heinrich Christian and Sophie Elisabeth Charlotte Auguste (Glade) Wettig, was born 29 Jul 1820 in Neustadt am Rübenberge, Hannover, Pru§ia, and married in 1848, in Neustadt am Rübenberge, Maria KAISER, daughter of Diedrich and Marie Dorothee (Heidemann) Kaiser, who was born in May 1821, in Hannover.
The 1850, U S Census, Cincinnati, Ohio, Ward 10 shows "Lewis Wettig, age 30, born in Hannover, wife Mary age 28, born Hannover, son Henry age 2, born Hannover, and daughter Wilhelmina, age 4 mo., born in Ohio. Mary and Louis Wettig were in the group of emigrants who left Hannover ca. 1849 to go to the USA. Their marriage is recorded in the Kirchenbuch of Neu am Rbnbg on the 20 of October 1846. They had a son, Heinrich, who was born on 10 January 1848, just before the emigration from Neu. Am Rbnbg. Shortly after arriving in Cincinnati, they had a daughter, Wilhelmina (Minnie), who never married.
Living with them (or next door to them, this is not clear.) in Cincinnati in 1850 was Henry Wettig, age 24, wife Mary, age 28, both born Hannover, and Augusta age 1, born Ohio. Living close by with the Mueller family was another brother, George Wettig, age 17 (born 1833 in Neu am Rbnbg), a varnisher. Also living close by was Wilhelmina Wettig, age 14, who lived with the Lorenz and Wilhelmina Decker. Wilhelmina (Wettig) Decker and the young Wilhelmina Wettig were sisters of Johann Heinrich Ludwig, Carl Heinrich Friedrich and Georg Heinrich Christian Wettig.
Johann Heinrich Ludwig is reported by the names Lewis and Louis in records of Cincinnati and Richmond, Indiana. I have found no records for the years1850 through 1860. City Directories in Cincinnati report his residence and work as follows: 1861, Louis Wettig, Cabinet Maker, works SW corner 2nd & John; 1862, Louis Wettig, Cabinet Maker, works Mitchell & Rammelsberger Furniture Mfg., 23 & 25 East 2nd Street (Note, too, that brother George worked with Mitchell & Rammelsberger in 1870) There is no further reference to Louis in 1866,1869 and 1870. In 1867 Louis Wetteck, Laborer, lived at a house on the west side of Bakewell between 8th & Riddle in Covington. This was the Henry Wettig address and was probably Henry's son, Henry Louis, who was 14 years old at the time. What happened to Johann Heinrich Ludwig during those years after 1862?
City Business Directories of Richmond, Indiana, have many references to the family Wettig: Louis Wettey, Cabinet Maker first appears in 1868, residing on the west side of 7th street, 4 houses north of South Pike. From 1870 through 1880, Louis Wettig, Carpenter, lived at 182 south 7th. In 1881-82 he moved to 426 South 10th. He remained at this address until his death, probably in 1882. His widow, Mary Wettig, is listed after 1882 at this address, until 1896. Her daughter, Minnie was living with her. Records of the St. Paul Lutheran Church, Richmond, Indiana, show that Maria Wettig was an active member. She attended several Christenings of her Grandchildren in the Church. She is identified in the Directories of the period 1888 through 1896 as the widow of Louis Wettig, living at 426 South 10th Street, Richmond, Indiana. Her daughters, Wilhelmina (Minnie) and Emma, who never married, lived with her during some of these years. Maria's husband, Ludwig, evidently died in 1882, since the first reference to Mary in the City Directory of 1883 is as "widow of Louis."
6 Georg August Heinrich WETTIG (419) was born in Neustadt am Rübenberge on 10 January 1848. He married (680) Augusta FAHLSING, who may have been born in Kentucky, in 1881 or 1882. The first time that the name Andrew was shown for Henry is in 1888-1889 Richmond City Directory when Andew Wettig is listed with his wife Augusta and living at the Henry Wettig address.
The 1850, U S Census, Ohio, Cincinnati, Ward 10 shows Lewis Wettig, age 30, born in Hanover, w Mary age 28, born Hanover, s Henry age 2, born Hanover, and d Wilhelmina, age 4 mo., born in Ohio."e This is Henry Wettig, son of Ludwig and Maria (Kaiser), born in Hannover just before the emigration to the USA.
I need much more research into the census records of 1860 through 1880 to follow the movements of Henry. The U S Census of 1900 shows Henry Wettig, born in Germany January 1848, and his wife, Augusta, born in Kentucky in February 1857, living at 127 South 10th Street. The Business Directories of that period report on Henry as follows: In 1865 Henry Wittich, Cabinet Maker (age 17 might be a little young for that title), lived with Henry Grieve on the west side of Washington Street, between Sycamore and Mill. Henry Grieve was the husband of Henry's Aunt Wilhelmina, known in Richmond as Minnie. This Henry Wittich may have been Johann Heinrich Christian (308), Wilhelmina's father, who probably lived with Wilhelmina until his death in 1872. In 1868 Henry, now listed as a Gardener, was living at 95 South Marion. His father, Ludwig now lived on Marion at south 7th Street. In 1870 Henry had once again reached the status of Cabinetmaker and lived with his parents at 182 South 7th. In succeeding years Henry moved a lot. We don't have to worry about getting him mixed up with his Grandfather, Johann Heinrich, since the latter died in 1872. In 1872 he lived at 155 South Marion; 1874-75 he was a Sawyer living at 71 South 7th; in 1876 he was a laborer living at 195 South 7th; in 1878-79 he was a Cabinet Maker boarding at 13 Noble Street; in 1879-80 he was a laborer living at 8th near Central. In 1881-82 Henry, now over 30 years of age, probably got married. In these years he was a "Lumber Sticker" and lived at 438 South 11th. In 1883, the first year that the workers wife was shown in the Business Directory, Henry is shown with wife, Augusta, and working with his nephew, George Heinrich, at Ezra Smith Casket & Vault Factory. In 1886-87 Henry, who worked at Richmond Chair, and Augusta lived at 207 South 9th. In 1888-89, Henry is not listed but Andrew Witte, who works at Quaker City Chair, and his wife Augusta live at 207 South
7th. In 1890-91 Henry A. Wettig, working Quaker Chaor Factory lives at 207 South 7th. From 1891 through 1894 Henry A. (now we know this is for Andrew) works at the Quaker City Chair Factory and lives at 207 South 7th Street. In 1895-96 Henry and Augusta move to 127 South 10th. There is no information about Henry and Augusta as a family. A little more research will no doubt turn up information on this. All of these addresses are within a few blocks of each other for all of the family members identified so far.Information from the Fahlsing Family is that Henry's name was Andrew and he married Augusta Fahlsing.
6 Wilhelmina WETTIG (420 ), was born in Cincinnati, Hamilton County, Ohio in 1850. She never married.
6 Georg Ludwig WETTIG (674), was born 3 Sep 1854 and died 27 Jul 1872. Records of the St Paul Lutheran Church in Richmond, Indiana, shows Georg Ludwig, son of Ludwig and Maria (Kaiser), geb. 3 September, 1854. He was injured in an accident which occurred on 25 July 1872. He was taken to the Hospital and died on 25 July 1872 at the age of 17 years, 10 months and 28 days. Burial was in the Church Cemetery.
6 Heinrich Georg WETTIG (676), was born 20 Feb 1858 and died 28 Aug 1933. He married (677) Katrina Maria Emma MENKE who was born in Richmond, Wayne County, Indiana in Jan 1867.
The U S Census of 1900 for Richmond, Indiana, shows that George Wettig, born Ohio in February 1859 was living with his wife, Emma, born Indiana in January 1867, at 438 South 11th Street. Living with them were six children, all born in Indiana: Nora, age 10; Howard, age 9; Mabel, age 7; Russell, age 6; Myron, age 4; and Lewis, age 7 Months.
George first shows in the Business Directories of Richmond in 1878, living with his parents and sister, Wilhelmina, at 182 South 7th Street. He continued to live there through 1881 and into 1882 when he went to work for the Ezra Smith Manufacturing Company. The Ezra Smith Company specialized in making Fine Caskets and Vaults. George had been taught the trade by his Grandfather, Johann Heinrich Christian, and his father, Ludwig. He was no doubt quite competent in this field.
After His father died in 1883 or 1884, George lived with his mother at the 426 South 10th address until his marriage to Emma in 1889. They moved, just around the corner, to 438 South 11th where they raised their family. I have not yet investigated beyond the 1900 Census, but will do that to complete the story of this family.
Family records supplied by Nancy Zimmerman, which were found after the death of her Father, Virgil, give the following obituary and story of his life:
George Heinrich Wettig, son of Louis and Mary Wettig, was born at Price Hill, Cincinnati, Ohio, February 20, 1858. He was the sixth of seven children, all of whom have preceded him in death. He spent his childhood in and around Cincinnati, coming to Richmond, Indiana, with his parents and their family about 1867, where he early became a member of the St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
For a number of years he was engaged in work as a finisher, being with the Richmond Casket Company, and later with the Rowlette Desk Factory and Starr Piano Company, from which concern he was retired several years ago.
On December 5, 1889, he was married to Emma, daughter of John Christopher and Berdina Koehring Menke. To this union was born ten children: Howard, Russell, Myron, Louis, Ruby, Rudolph, and Mildred, all of whom are living, and Nora, Mabel and Herbert, now deceased.
Mr. Wettig, upon his retirement enjoyed reasonably good health, and his death occurred quite suddenly at 8:10 AM, August 28, 1933, at which time he had attained the age of 75 years, 6 months and 8 days. He leaves as survivirs, the widow, Emma, seven children and five grandchildren.
6 Emma WETTIG (675), the last child of Louis and Mary was born in May 1865, in Richmond, Indiana. Emma never married and lived with her mother, Mary and sister Minnie on occasion until 1896.
